Canadian New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh has called for US President Donald Trump to be banned from Canada, citing his criminal conviction and perceived threats to global stability. Singh made the remarks on Wednesday during a speech at the Montreal Council on Foreign Relations, ahead of the G7 Summit scheduled for June 15-17 in Alberta.
“I also believe we need to ban Donald Trump from attending the G7 Summit. Donald Trump should not be welcome here,” Singh said. “Why would we allow a convicted criminal into our country?”
Singh went further, labelling Trump a “fascist” and criticising his actions during his second presidency, including cuts to international aid, withdrawal from the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement, and policies benefiting billionaires.
“Why would we invite someone who has threatened our very democracy, our very sovereignty? Why would we invite someone who has threatened our economic well-being, who threatens our allies, and threatens the world's stability?” Singh asked.
“These meetings should be focused on how we are going to resist Donald Trump,” he added, urging Canada and its allies to use the G7 platform to counter Trump’s policies.
The G7 Summit will be held in the Kananaskis region, about 100 kilometres west of Calgary. The Canadian government has not commented on Singh’s remarks or whether Trump will be barred from attending.
