Who was Gerald E. Connolly? Senior Democrat and Virginia lawmaker dies at 75
Gerald E. Connolly, a senior Democrat from Virginia and a top member of the House Oversight Committee, has died at 75.
He passed away peacefully on Wednesday at home, surrounded by family, following a battle with oesophageal cancer.
Connolly passed away at his home, according to a statement issued by his loved ones. The family did not reveal the cause of death, though Connolly had shared in 2024 that he was undergoing treatment for cancer of the oesophagus. Last month, he confirmed the cancer had returned and announced he would not seek re-election in 2026.
“It is with immense sadness that we share that our devoted and loving father, husband, brother, friend, and public servant, Congressman Gerald E. Connolly, passed away peacefully at his home this morning surrounded by family,” the statement read.
Connolly had served as the congressman for Virginia’s 11th district since 2009, representing parts of northern Virginia. Before his time in Congress, he spent 14 years on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.
A longtime lawmaker and key figure in Democratic politics, Connolly had recently chosen to step down from his role on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. In April, he spoke openly and bravely about his fight with cancer.
“When I announced my diagnosis six months ago, I promised transparency,” Connolly said. “After gruelling treatments, we’ve learned that the cancer, while initially beaten back, has now returned. I’ll do everything possible to continue to represent you and thank you for your grace.”
Connolly was known for his strong support of public service and for standing up for justice and equality.
“Gerry lived his life to give back to others and make our community better,” his family said in their statement. “He looked out for the disadvantaged and voiceless. He always stood up for what is right and just.”
They added, “His absence will leave a hole in our hearts, but we are proud that his life’s work will endure for future generations. We thank you for your love of Gerry, and know he loved you all so much.”
