Anna Paulina Luna, Florida GOP representative, announced her resignation from the House Freedom Caucus in a letter to fellow conservatives on Monday, marking a new chapter in her ongoing battle with House GOP leaders and a faction of hard-right members over the issue of proxy voting.
Luna has allied with Democrats and some Republicans to push for legislation that would allow new parents in the House to vote remotely for up to 12 weeks following the birth of their child.
Representative Anna Paulina Luna, a GOP member, has expressed frustration over the opposition she faced from some members of the House Freedom Caucus regarding her proposal to allow new parents to vote remotely. Luna, who ultimately left the group over this issue, accused a faction within the Freedom Caucus of holding Speaker Mike Johnson "hostage" and behaving “disingenuous” in their stance.
Speaking to CNN, Luna said: “The speaker is being held hostage. You had members — a small group of the Freedom Caucus, not all of them but a small group — that threatened to shut down the House floor regardless of what agenda was being placed, whether it was the president’s or not and that’s not right.”
While Luna acknowledged that many within the Freedom Caucus were committed to conservative ideals, she emphasised, “There are some great people that are still members of the Freedom Caucus, but there’s a small faction that’s disingenuous and I’m not going to play that game.”
Alongside Democratic Representative Brittany Pettersen, Luna is advocating for a change in House rules that would allow new parents — both mothers and fathers — to vote by proxy for up to 12 weeks following the birth of a child. However, this proposal has sparked division within the Republican Party, with some leaders arguing that it could be unconstitutional and set a problematic precedent.
To push the issue forward, Luna has been attempting to use a discharge petition, a rare procedural method that enables lawmakers to force a vote on a measure if they can garner enough support from fellow members, specifically 217 votes.
