NEW DELHI: The
US presidential election
is round the corner, but millions of
voters
have already caste their ballots. This is because many states allow eligible voters to cast ballots through alternate method of voting, ahead of the
Election
Day. Alternate method of
voting
works in three ways.
Early voting: Any qualified voter may cast a ballot in person during a designated period prior to Election Day. No excuse or justification is required. As many as 37 states and the District of Columbia permit this.
Absentee voting: Under this type of voting, the states sent an absentee ballot to all those voters who request for the same. The voter may return the ballot by mail or in person. In 20 states, an excuse is required, while 27 states and the District of Columbia permit any qualified voter to vote absentee without offering an excuse.
All mail voting: A ballot is automatically mailed to every eligible voter (no request or application is necessary). Currently, three states use all mail voting. In recent years, there has been a rise in the numbers of voters who voted by alternate method of voting.
