US President-elect Donald Trump has chosen former senator David Perdue to be the next Ambassador to China, recognising Perdue's wide international experience.

Trump announced on his Truth Social account, praising Perdue's 40-year business career, his time as a Fortune 500 CEO, and his previous work in the US Senate, where he served on key committees including Armed Services and Foreign Relations.

In his post, Trump highlighted Perdue's deep ties to Asia, having lived in both Singapore and Hong Kong and worked extensively in China. The former senator’s experience will be crucial in strengthening US-China relations, Trump said, adding that Perdue’s role would be vital in implementing his strategy for peace in the region.

Trump concluded by saying, "David has been a loyal supporter and friend, and I look forward to working with him in his new role!"

Responding on X (formerly Twitter), Perdue expressed his honour at accepting the nomination. "I am truly honoured to accept President Trump’s nomination to become the next US Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China," he wrote. "Having lived in Asia on two occasions, I understand the gravity of this responsibility and look forward to implementing President Trump’s strategy to make the world safe again and to represent the United States’ interests in China," he added.

Perdue’s appointment is an important step in US foreign policy as the country works to manage its complex relationship with China.
