The United States military has introduced new uniform guidelines that limit servicewomen's nail polish options, causing discontent among female personnel.

"People are not happy," Elora Jean, an active US Air Force member, shared on TikTok, referencing discussions she observed in online forums.

The revised regulations specify that while in uniform, service members can only choose from three nail manicure options: clear, French or American.

"They think that the priorities are a little bit skewed right now and that nail polish is really not that serious and that there's a lot of other things that should be focused on when it comes to military readiness and recruiting and general wellbeing for people in the military," Jean continued.

She also said that this policy shift arrives approximately one year after the Department of Defense had permitted service members to wear 60 different nail polish colours in uniform.

Currently, female service members are restricted to clear polish, French tips, or American manicures - the latter being a variation of French manicure featuring white tips topped with a sheer nude shade.

A servicewoman expressed her disappointment on TikTok about joining the Air Force. "I joined the [Air Force] 'cause I knew I could still have fun nails. I'm done," she said.

On Reddit, another member shared her frustration about spending $50 on newly-painted nails that were no longer permitted, while acknowledging there were more important issues within the Air Force and personnel facing greater challenges with the recent modifications.

Someone criticised the swift implementation of the policy change, stating that the rapid enforcement was inappropriate, particularly when it had financial implications for Air Force members.

The debate extended to social media, where some questioned the relevance of nail polish colours to military performance, while others dismissed the concerns of Air Force personnel regarding the new rules.
