US election results 2024: Donald Trump wins stronghold South Dakota

Former President Donald Trump won South Dakota's three electoral votes on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. The AP declared Trump the winner at 9.00 p.m. EST.

Trump, the Republican nominee, was widely expected to win the state. Republicans outnumber Democrats in South Dakota by more than two to one.

“Trump received nearly 62 per cent of the vote in each of his previous runs for president, and both times his margin was more than 26 percentage points," the AP reported.

Almost 51 percent of the state's 616,000 registered voters are Republicans. Fewer than 24 percent are Democrats.

No Democratic presidential nominee has won South Dakota since Lyndon Johnson in 1964.
