Trump's pro-Israel cabinet choices upset US Muslims

Some Muslim leaders who supported Donald Trump for president are expressing disappointment over his Cabinet selections, particularly those handling foreign policy. These leaders say they backed Trump in protest against the Biden administration's stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"Trump won because of us and we're not happy with his Secretary of State pick and others," Rabiul Chowdhury, a Philadelphia investor who actively campaigned for Trump told Reuters. Muslim support for Trump was particularly noticeable in key states like Michigan, where it potentially influenced the election outcome, according to strategists.

The main point of contention appears to be Trump's selection of individuals seen as staunchly pro-Israel for key positions:

- Secretary of State: Senator Marco Rubio, who has voiced strong support for Israel's actions in Gaza. Rubio stated earlier, "I would not call for a ceasefire in Gaza, and that I believed Israel should destroy 'every element' of Hamas. 'These people are vicious animals,' he added."
- Ambassador to Israel: Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, known for his conservative views and support for Israel, including the occupation of the West Bank.
- Ambassador to the United Nations: Representative Elise Stefanik, who has criticized the UN for its stance on the Gaza conflict.

Rexhinaldo Nazarko, head of the American Muslim Engagement and Empowerment Network (AMEEN), expressed the sentiment of many, stating, "We are very disappointed. 'It seems like this administration has been packed entirely with neoconservatives and extremely pro-Israel, pro-war people, which is a failure on the on the side of President Trump, to the pro-peace and anti-war movement.'"

Despite the disappointment, some Muslim Trump supporters hold out hope. They highlight Trump's past outreach efforts to Muslim communities and his visits to cities with large Muslim populations. However, the overall feeling amongst this group appears to be one of disillusionment with the early signs of Trump's foreign policy team.
