Trump wins court battle: US Supreme Court greenlights migrant deportation; third-country deports to resume

The US Supreme Court on Monday allowed the Donald Trump administration to resume deportations of migrants to countries other than their homelands, lifting a lower court order which had temporarily blocked the move.The ruling is a notable win for the Trump administration, which had challenged the lower court’s April order which required the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to notify migrants in writing about their destinations and to give them a chance to contest their deportation due to fears of torture.DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin indicated that deportations to third countries could resume shortly. “Fire up the deportation planes," she said in a statement, calling the decision “a victory for the safety and security of the American people."The Supreme Court's ruling came after a recent incident in which immigration authorities placed eight migrants from Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cuba on a flight destined for South Sudan, but the flight was then diverted to a US naval base in Djibouti after a federal judge's intervention.The Trump administration has reached agreements with other countries, such as Panama and Costa Rica, to accommodate immigrants, since certain countries refuse to take back their citizens who have been deported from the US.The ongoing crackdown on immigrants comes as a result of President Donald Trump's commitment to deport millions of individuals residing in the United States without legal status.Read |US immigration rules are blocking Indian talent, say tech leaders
