Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th US president on Monday and during his inaugural address he pledged to take America beyond Earth by promising to "plant the stars and stripes on the planet Mars."
"We will pursue our manifest destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars," he said in his inauguration speech at the US Capitol in Washington.
The statement drew immediate applause from SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who was seated beside Barron Trump during the inauguration ceremony. Musk, a long-time advocate for Mars colonization, smiled and applauded the bold goal.

Elon Musk, whose company SpaceX has been leading efforts in space exploration, has frequently pressed on the importance of making humans a multiplanetary species.
Taking office with Republicans holding unified control of Washington, Trump pledged to implement immediate policy changes. He promised a “revolution of common sense” and outlined plans to reverse key actions of his predecessor, Joe Biden.
Executive orders prepared for swift implementation include measures to clamp down on border crossings, expand fossil fuel production, and end diversity and inclusion programs across federal agencies.
“Our sovereignty will be reclaimed. Our safety will be restored. The scales of justice will be rebalanced,” Trump said during his address, describing what he called a "crisis of trust" in government.
Trump’s return to the White House follows his overcoming of impeachments, criminal indictments, and two assassination attempts. He is only the second president in US history, after Grover Cleveland, to return to office after being voted out.
The new president declared his mission to restore faith, wealth, democracy, and freedom to the American people. “From this moment on, America’s decline is over,” he said, vowing to give the nation a fresh start.
