Trump picks Kari Lake to lead Voice of America

President-elect Trump has announced that former television news anchor Kari Lake will serve as the next director of the federally funded broadcaster Voice of America.

In his post on Truth social, Trump wrote, "I am pleased to announce that Kari Lake will serve as our next Director of the Voice of America. She will be appointed by, and work closely with, our next head of the U.S. Agency for Global media, who I will announce soon, to ensure that the American values of freedom and liberty are broadcast around the world fairly and accurately, unlike the lies spread by the fake news media. Kari was a beloved news anchor in Arizona, which supported me by record margins, for over 20 years. Congratulations Kari!"


Kari Lake is a former news anchor from Arizona. Born in Iowa and the youngest of nine siblings, she gained national attention during her 2022 campaign for Arizona governor. Running on an "America first" agenda with Donald Trump's endorsement, Lake lost the election.

Recently, she also missed out on the 2024 US Senate race against senator Kyrsten Sinema and representative Ruben Gallego. Before politics, Lake worked as a news reporter in Phoenix, Arizona, for many years.

Lake has been active in conservative politics, focusing on topics like immigration, election laws, and criticising the Biden administration. She is a strong supporter of Trump’s policies, particularly on border security and energy independence.

Voice of America, a government-funded broadcaster, was among the appointments announced by Mr. Trump during a series of administration picks on Wednesday night.
