Trump, Epstein and a Doodle: The birthday letter that set off a political firestorm - that is burning MAGA
TL;DR
- A 2003 Epstein birthday scrapbook contains a nude sketch and a cryptic letter allegedly signed by Trump.
- The Wall Street Journal published it—Trump sued for $20 billion.
- The DOJ confirmed Trump’s name appears in Epstein-related files.
- Trump had denied it. The evidence says otherwise.
- MAGA world is cracking—some loyalists want answers.
- DOJ faces demands to unseal the Epstein grand jury records.
The Birthday Letter That Set Off a Political Firestorm
On July 17, 2025, the Wall Street Journal published a report that detonated like a legal grenade in the middle of an already volatile political climate. The headline wasn’t about policy, indictment, or poll numbers. It was about a birthday album. More specifically, Jeffrey Epstein’s 50th birthday album — compiled in 2003 by Ghislaine Maxwell — which included letters and messages from his network of high-powered friends. Tucked among the pages was a note allegedly from Donald J. Trump.
What Was in the Letter?
Trump’s Denial and Legal Threats
Within hours of the story breaking, Trump responded with characteristic fury:
- He called the note “FAKE.”
- Claimed he had “never drawn a woman in my life.”
- Accused The Wall Street Journal and Rupert Murdoch of pushing a “globalist smear campaign.”
- Threatened to sue for defamation — and days later, filed a $20 billion lawsuit in Florida federal court.
- He also demanded the DOJ release all Epstein-related materials, including grand jury documents, saying: “Let the world see the truth.”
The DOJ’s Mixed Signals
In May 2025 — before the WSJ story — Trump’s legal team had been notified by the Department of Justice (led by Attorney General Pam Bondi) that his name appeared in Epstein case files multiple times. At the time, Trump’s team denied it.
But post-publication, under mounting pressure, the DOJ admitted: yes, Trump’s name does appear in Epstein-related materials. Multiple times. They had reviewed the birthday album as part of their investigation years earlier, and it was “archived” when the Epstein criminal case was closed after his death.
That set off alarms across Washington. Was the DOJ suppressing information to protect Trump? Or were they attempting to distance themselves from a political powder keg?
MAGA World Turns on Itself
The MAGA base — long convinced that Epstein’s files would expose Democrats, tech elites, and Hollywood — was suddenly facing the possibility that their own leader had more involvement than previously admitted.
This sparked a civil war in Trumpworld:
- Some MAGA influencers demanded all Epstein files be released immediately.
- Others blamed the DOJ, accusing Bondi of betraying the movement by not proactively clearing Trump’s name.
- Conspiracy channels lit up with theories: that the letter was forged, planted, or deepfaked by enemies within the DOJ or Murdoch empire.
Doodles, Auctions, and Old Evidence
Trump’s denial about “never drawing a woman in my life” was quickly challenged.
Media outlets resurfaced public auctions and charity appearances where Trump had donated drawings:
- A New York skyline sketched in marker.
- A “money tree” doodle included in his 2010 book.
- A signed sketch of the Empire State Building, sold at auction in 2017.
- None of them featured nudes. But they did confirm that Trump is — and has been — perfectly capable of sketching with a Sharpie.
- The contradiction didn’t prove the birthday drawing was Trump’s. But it undermined his denial, cast doubt, and fuelled media cycles across the spectrum.
Why Does This Matter?
It revives the Trump–Epstein connection. Trump and Epstein were publicly known to be friends in the 1990s and early 2000s. Trump once said Epstein “likes beautiful women… on the younger side.” He later claimed he cut ties with him. The birthday note undermines that narrative of distance.
It creates a legal fight Trump doesn’t control. His $20 billion lawsuit is a high-stakes gamble: if the Journal has evidence verifying the letter’s authenticity, the lawsuit could backfire spectacularly. It shatters a narrative within Trump’s base. For years, many believed Epstein’s documents would only damage Trump’s enemies. Now, that assumption is under scrutiny. It pulls the DOJ into political crossfire. Pam Bondi, once Trump’s ally, is now accused by both sides — for withholding files and for not protecting Trump aggressively enough.
