‘This is wrong’: Team USA curler speaks out on Minnesota ICE raids during Olympics

Team USA curler Rich Ruohonen used an Olympic press conference to speak out about events unfolding in his home state of Minnesota, calling the situation “wrong” and saying he felt a responsibility to address it while representing the United States on the world stage.

Ruohonen, who is competing at the 2026 Winter Olympics, said he was proud to wear the Team USA uniform but wanted to acknowledge what he described as troubling developments back home linked to recent immigration enforcement actions. Speaking near the end of the press conference, he stressed that his comments reflected both his personal convictions and his professional background as an attorney with nearly three decades of experience.




The Minnesota native referenced constitutional principles, including protections for free speech and against unreasonable searches and seizures, as he explained why he believed it was important to speak publicly. He said the situation in Minnesota was clear-cut and did not involve moral ambiguity, describing it as a matter of basic rights and fairness.




Ruohonen also praised residents of Minnesota for showing compassion and solidarity during a difficult period. He said those responses reflected values he associates with the Olympic movement, including respect, integrity and unity.

While political statements by athletes at the Olympics remain controversial, Ruohonen said acknowledging events affecting people back home was consistent with the freedoms athletes represent when competing for their country. His remarks quickly drew attention because of their timing and the setting in which they were delivered.

Ruohonen is a long-time competitive curler and a practising lawyer based in Minnesota. His decision to speak during the Games placed him among a small number of US athletes who have used the Olympic platform to comment on domestic issues, prompting both support and criticism from observers.

The comments added a political dimension to Team USA’s presence at the Games, underscoring the ongoing debate over the role of athletes in public discourse during global sporting events.
