‘Tap to monitor the situation’: White House shares cryptic post amid Trump’s Greenland push
The White House on Tuesday shared a series of images on X showing US President Donald Trump gazing out of the Oval Office window towards Greenland, accompanied by the cryptic caption, “Tap to monitor the situation.”
The post has reignited global concern over Trump’s repeated claims that Greenland should become part of the United States.
The social media post follows months of increasingly aggressive rhetoric from Trump, who has described US control of Greenland as a “necessity” for national security. In an interview with NBC News earlier this month, Trump said he would not rule out the use of force to acquire the strategically located Arctic territory.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Monday said there was no fixed timeline for acquiring Greenland but confirmed it remained a priority. “The president has not set a timeline, but it’s definitely a priority for him,” she told reporters.
Other images in the post showed digitally altered views from the Oval Office overlooking Greenland’s Thule Air Base, officially known as Pituffik Space Base, and locations in Germany such as the Black Forest.
The Thule Air Base, located in northwest Greenland, is the United States’ northernmost military installation and a critical hub for missile warning and space surveillance.
Why Trump wants Greenland
Trump’s focus on Greenland intensified after a recent US strike on Caracas that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. He has argued that US ownership of Greenland is essential to prevent Russia or China from gaining a foothold in the Arctic. Trump has claimed the region is already “covered with Russian and Chinese ships” and has mocked Greenland’s limited defences, once saying they consisted of just “two dog sleds.”
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, but its strategic importance far exceeds its small population. Military planners often describe it as a “giant stationary aircraft carrier,” given its critical location between North America and Europe in the rapidly militarising Arctic region.
In 1951, the US and Denmark signed the Greenland Defense Agreement, under which Washington assumed responsibility for defending the island as part of Nato commitments. The agreement allows the US to operate military facilities on Greenlandic soil, including the Thule Air Base, now known as Pituffik Space Base.
Trump first floated the idea of buying Greenland during his first term in 2019, an offer Denmark swiftly dismissed. He revived the proposal after returning to the White House in January 2025, citing intensifying competition with Russia and China in the Arctic.
