NEW DELHI: On Saturday, the San Diego Padres made a significant move by signing left-handed reliever Yuki Matsui to a five-year contract. The five-time All-Star in Japan reportedly secured a deal worth $28 million.

Yuki Matsui, 28, comes to the Padres with an impressive track record in the Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) league. Over his 10-season career with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, Matsui compiled a record of 25-46 with 236 saves in 501 appearances (including 17 starts). He boasts a stellar 2.40 ERA and 860 strikeouts in 659 2/3 innings.

In the 2022 season, Matsui had a standout performance, achieving a career-high 39 saves with a remarkable 1.57 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 59 appearances. His success extended to the international stage, as he contributed to Team Japan's Gold Medal-winning effort in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

Matsui is expected to fill a crucial role as a late-inning reliever for the Padres, providing a left-handed presence out of the bullpen. The move comes as the Padres face changes in their pitching staff, with the departure of free-agent left-handed closer Josh Hader and right-handers Luis Garcia (signed with the Los Angeles Angels) and Nick Martinez (signed with the Cincinnati Reds). Additionally, the Padres traded right-hander Scott Barlow to the Cleveland Guardians, and left-hander Tim Hill is leaving as a free agent.

The signing of Yuki Matsui represents a strategic move by the Padres to bolster their bullpen and enhance their pitching depth as they aim to compete at a high level in the upcoming season.
