In a video shared by conservative political commentator and YouTuber Benny Johnson, Republican, and Florida Governor DeSantis is seen criticising a reporter, saying, “If Newsom were a Republican, you guys would have him nailed to the wall for what they're doing over there.”

He went on to criticise journalists for creating divisive narratives, stating, “Your track record of politicising these things is very, very bad.”

DeSantis’ comments followed remarks by President-elect Trump, who took to Truth Social to hold the Democrat governor directly responsible for the wildfires. “One of the best and most beautiful parts of the United States of America is burning down to the ground,” Trump had said.

Newsom had fired back, accusing Trump of attempting to "politicise" the tragedy. His office condemned the president-elect's social media posts about the environmental catastrophe as "pure fiction," according to The Independent.

Trump continued his attack on Newsom on Truth Social on Thursday, saying, "Governor Gavin Newscum should immediately go to Northern California, open up the water main, and let the water flow into his dry, starving, burning state, instead of letting it waste away into the Pacific Ocean. This needs to be done now—no more excuses from this incompetent governor. It’s already far too late!"

Trump’s criticism reflects his ongoing frustration with the wildfires that have had a severe impact on California, destroying homes and forcing large-scale evacuations.
