NEW DELHI: The Seattle Mariners are set to acquire second baseman Jorge Polanco from the Minnesota Twins in a trade deal. In return, the Twins will receive right-handed pitchers Anthony DeSclafani and Justin Topa, along with two prospects, outfielder Gabriel Gonzalez and right-hander Darren Bowen.
Jorge Polanco, a 30-year-old infielder, has spent his entire 10-year MLB career with the Twins. In the previous season, he posted a .255 batting average with a .454 slugging percentage, hitting 14 home runs and driving in 48 RBIs in 80 games. Over his career, Polanco has accumulated a .269 batting average and a .446 slugging percentage in 832 games, including 112 home runs, 181 doubles, and 447 RBIs.
Anthony DeSclafani, a 33-year-old right-handed pitcher, recently moved from the San Francisco Giants to the Mariners in the trade that involved sending Robbie Ray to the Giants. DeSclafani recorded a 4-8 record with a 4.88 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) for the Giants in the previous season, and he holds a career record of 54-56 with a 4.20 ERA over parts of nine seasons.
Justin Topa, a 32-year-old right-handed pitcher, had limited appearances for the Milwaukee Brewers from 2020 to 2022. However, he played a more significant role in the bullpen for the Mariners in 2023, making 75 relief appearances with a 5-4 record, a 2.61 ERA, and three saves. The trade is part of the Mariners' efforts to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season.
