TUCSON: Doctors performed a tracheotomy on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, inserting a breathing tube through a hole in her neck and removing her from a ventilator , hospital officials said.
It was the first time Giffords was removed from the ventilator since last Saturday, when she arrived at University Medical Center after a gunman shot her through the head.

Giffords, 40, remains the only patient in critical condition from the shooting that wounded 12 others. Six people were killed in the rampage.
Meanwhile, in an unexpected twist, a man wounded in the attack was arrested and taken for a psychiatric exam after an outburst at a town hall meeting, during which he took a picture of a conservative activist and yelled “you're dead”.
James Eric Fuller apparently became upset when Trent Humphries, a local leader of the conservative tea party movement, said conversations about gun control be delayed until all the dead were buried, authorities said.
