Held 'useful' call with Trump on Ukraine, says Putin
Russia president Vladimir Putin received a telephone call from US President Donald Trump on Monday, according to a White House official, quoted by Reuters.
According to report, Putin said that he held 'useful' call with Trump on Ukraine.
Trump aims to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which began with Russia's military intervention.
Earlier on Monday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated that Trump's primary objective for the conversation was to achieve a resolution to the conflict. She also noted that the US president had become increasingly impatient and dissatisfied with both parties involved in the situation.
The White House had indicated that Trump's becoming "weary and frustrated" with the slow conflict resolution progress. Meanwhile, the Kremlin acknowledged the significance of the communication between the Russian and US presidents.
Trump's schedule also includes discussions with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Nato officials as he attempts to resolve the three-year conflict.
Despite his campaign promise to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours of assuming office, the 78-year-old Republican's diplomatic initiatives have shown limited success.
Vice President JD Vance confirmed Trump's diminishing patience. "There's a bit of an impasse here, and I think the president's going to say to President Putin, look, are you serious?" Vance told reporters after his meetings with Pope Leo XIV and Zelenskyy in Rome. "If Russia is not willing to do that, then we're eventually just going have to say, this is not our war," he added.
With regards to the conflict, Russian leadership expressed preference for diplomatic resolution. Zelenskyy emphasised the necessity of complete ceasefire before diplomatic progress. The Istanbul negotiations, the first direct talks in three years, concluded without agreement, with Ukraine criticising Russia's delegation composition.
Following these talks, Trump announced his planned conversation with Putin to address the "BLOODBATH" in Ukraine. Western allies subsequently criticised Putin's resistance to ceasefire calls.
The British, French, German and Italian leaders consulted with Trump, calling on the need for unconditional ceasefire and serious peace negotiations from Putin.
Meanwhile, Russia reported capturing two villages in Ukraine's eastern regions and launched numerous drone attacks, though Ukraine claimed to have intercepted many. Putin maintained Russia's position regarding the conflict's "root causes" in a state TV interview.
