Christopher Rufo to present higher education reform plan to Trump’s team

Christopher Rufo, a prominent conservative activist and documentary filmmaker, is set to meet with President-elect Donald Trump’s team at Mar-a-Lago to outline a proposal aimed at reforming American universities.

According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Rufo plans to recommend withholding federal funding from institutions that continue to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

The proposal marks the latest chapter in Rufo’s campaign to combat practices he believes divide Americans and promote bias against white men.

Rufo’s invitation to Mar-a-Lago follows his growing influence as a culture warrior. In 2020, Rufo helped shape an executive order banning race and sex stereotyping in the federal government.

He now aims to build on that momentum by targeting what he describes as a pervasive ideology in higher education. His plan includes measures to eliminate race-based affirmative action, which he sees as discriminatory against white and Asian students, and proposals to close the Education Department, drastically reducing the number of four-year college enrollees.

As per the WSJ, Rufo's work has also sparked high-profile controversies. He exposed instances of plagiarism involving Harvard President Claudine Gay and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, both of which led to significant fallout.

Beyond academia, Rufo has targeted DEI efforts in major corporations such as Boeing.

Rufo’s advocacy for a “colourblind” society has garnered both support and criticism.

Vice President-elect JD Vance called Rufo “a leading voice in the movement to restore merit and excellence” to universities. However, civil rights groups argue his efforts promote the denial of systemic racism and undermine racial equity.

While Rufo denies seeking an official role in the Trump administration, his influence on its agenda is evident. He advocates holding universities accountable for graduate earnings and shifting responsibility for loan defaults to colleges.

His approach has drawn criticism for prioritising spectacle over substance, as noted by a former professor at New College of Florida, where Rufo serves as a trustee.

Rufo’s upcoming meeting signals a pivotal moment for higher education policy, with potential implications for universities, businesses, and the broader cultural landscape.
