National security adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed the meeting on CBS News' "Face the Nation," saying Biden aims to ensure a smooth transfer of power and discuss critical global issues with the incoming president. Ukraine is expected to be a key topic, according to media reports.

Sullivan stressed Biden's commitment to advocating for Ukraine, saying:

"President Biden will have the opportunity over the next 70 days to make the case to the Congress and to the incoming administration that the United States should not walk away from Ukraine, that walking away from Ukraine means more instability in Europe.”

Trump has previously criticised the level of US funding for Ukraine, aligning with some Republican lawmakers who have expressed reservations about the ongoing financial commitment. With Republicans poised to control the senate and potentially the House, securing future aid packages for Ukraine could prove challenging for the Biden administration.

The meeting follows a significant escalation in the conflict, with Ukraine launching its largest drone strike on Moscow since the war began.
