Baby dies in US’s Missouri after mother mistakes oven for crib

NEW DELHI: A baby in Missouri died after her mother accidentally placed her in an oven for a nap, confusing it with a crib. Mariah Thomas, a resident of Kansas City, now faces charges of endangering the welfare of a child in the wake of the incident.

According to a statement from Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney Jean Peters Baker, the incident unfolded on Friday afternoon when the police responded to a distress call reporting an infant not breathing. Upon arrival, responders discovered the child with apparent burns, and despite their efforts, the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

Details emerged in a probable cause statement, revealing that a witness informed authorities that the mother, Mariah Thomas, had mistakenly placed the child in the oven instead of the crib while putting her down for a nap. The statement did not provide further clarification on how such an error occurred.

Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker acknowledged the grim nature of the incident and said in a statement, "We trust the criminal justice system to respond appropriately to these awful circumstances."

The court records do not yet indicate whether Thomas has legal representation.
