400% rise in anti-Semitic incidents across US following Hamas terror attack

The United States has seen a shocking surge in antisemitic incidents, with cases increasing by almost 400% following the Hamas attack on Israel in October, according to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The ADL reported a total of 312 incidents between October 7 and 23, compared to 64 incidents during the same period in 2022. The rise in incidents is directly tied to the conflict between Israel and Hamas, with 190 incidents directly associated with the crisis. The increase in antisemitism is not limited to the US, as global incidents are also on the rise.
400% rise in anti-Semitic incidents across US following Hamas terror attack
A shocking surge in antisemitic incidents has been reported across the United States, with the number of cases spiking by nearly 400% following the Hamas attack on Israel that occurred on October 7, according to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).
Data from the ADL Center on Extremism reveals a disturbing trend. Between October 7 and October 23, 2023, ADL identified a total of 312 incidents, encompassing various forms of harassment, vandalism, and assaults.
To put this in perspective, during the same period in 2022, only 64 incidents were reported, with just four of them linked to Israel.
The ADL's report sheds light on how these incidents are tied directly to the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Out of the 312 incidents, a significant 190 were directly associated with the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. These incidents range from alleged physical assaults to a concerning surge in violent messages on platforms like Telegram.
Moreover, the ADL noted that following the Hamas attack, approximately 400 anti-Israel rallies took place in the US. Of these rallies, a troubling 109 demonstrated either explicit support for Hamas or displayed strong implicit intentions of violence against Jews in Israel. These 109 events were included in the overall count of antisemitic incidents.
Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, expressed his deep concerns, stating, "When conflict erupts in Israel, antisemitic incidents soon follow in the US and globally. From white supremacists in California to radical anti-Zionists, we are witnessing a troubling surge in antisemitic behavior domestically while conflict intensifies abroad."
These antisemitic incidents are not confined to any specific region. They have been reported across various US cities, including a near collision involving a car displaying Palestinian flags in Clifton, NJ, and an assault on a Jewish student in Detroit, MI. Additional incidents include threats by someone claiming affiliation with Hamas in
Los Angeles, CA, an assault on a man carrying an Israeli flag in Indianapolis, IN, and even a sudden attack on a Jewish woman at New York's Grand Central Terminal. In Walnut Creek, CA, antisemitic banners were displayed by a white supremacist group, and Israeli individuals faced harassment in Times Square, NY.
In an alarming trend, the ADL also observed a near-1,000% surge in violent messages mentioning Jews and Israel on the messaging platform Telegram following the Hamas attack.
This surge in antisemitic incidents has prompted ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt to call on leaders at all levels to stand firmly against antisemitism and terrorism. Greenblatt emphasized, "Words matter. We call on those in power to use their platforms to condemn hate and terrorism, no matter where it manifests."
Unfortunately, the surge in antisemitism is not confined to the United States. Globally, antisemitic incidents are on the rise. In France, 588 incidents led to 336 arrests. In London, police documented 218 antisemitic hate crimes between October 1 and 18, marking a 13-fold increase from the previous year. In Germany, there was a 240% spike in antisemitic incidents, and reports also emerged from various parts of Europe, Latin America, North Africa, Australia, and other regions.
These disturbing developments underline the urgent need for a united and concerted effort to combat the rise of antisemitism and ensure the safety and security of Jewish communities worldwide.
