Starting from Thursday, a unique 50 pence coin commemorating King Charles III's Coronation in May will be found in circulation across the United Kingdom. The Royal Mint has announced that around 5 million of these 50p coins will be distributed to Post Offices and bank branches nationwide. The design on the coin celebrates the 74-year-old British monarch's Coronation on May 6.

This release marks the second appearance of a 50p coin featuring King Charles III's official portrait, the first being a memorial coin that entered circulation in December of the previous year. The memorial coin was issued to mark the historic transition from Queen Elizabeth II to King Charles III.

Rebecca Morgan, the Director of Commemorative Coin at the Royal Mint, expressed the significance of this occasion: "This is a special moment for the nation, as members of the public will have the opportunity to find a piece of history in their change."

The design on the reverse side of the new 50p coin, created by Royal Mint Coin Designer Natasha Jenkins, showcases the iconic Westminster Abbey in London, the site of the King's Coronation. At the center of the design is the King's official cypher, symbolizing his crowning at the Abbey.

The obverse side, or heads side, of the 50p coin features the King's official portrait, which was revealed in September of the preceding year. The portrait was crafted by renowned British sculptor Martin Jennings and received personal approval from King Charles III.

It's worth noting that all 50p coins entering circulation will depict the King's uncrowned portrait, distinguishing them from the commemorative Coronation coins introduced earlier in the year.

Earlier in the year, the Royal Mint introduced a commemorative coin collection to celebrate the King's Coronation. This collection has garnered popularity globally, with collectors from 89 countries making purchases.

Coins bearing the likeness of Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles III's late mother, will continue to be legal tender and remain in active circulation. It is a customary practice for coins featuring various monarchs to co-circulate in the UK, ensuring a seamless transition with minimal environmental impact and cost.

The UK currently has approximately 27 billion coins in circulation featuring Queen Elizabeth II. These coins will gradually be replaced over time due to wear and tear, as well as to meet the demand for additional coins, according to the Royal Mint.
