LONDON: Britain’s king in waiting
Prince Charles spent over an hour with his grand-daughter at Kensington Palace on Sunday as the world eagerly waited to hear the princess’s name.
Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton were on Saturday blessed with a baby girl – their second child. The new born princess is fourth in line to the British throne after her elder brother prince George who was born on July 2013.
The baby’s name is yet to be announced but book makers have Alice and Charlotte as joint favourites followed by Victoria and Elizabeth.
Prince Charles – the new grandfather drove in to Kensington Palace himself on Sunday morning along with the Duchess of Cornwall and spent more than an hour. They were followed by Kate Middleton’s parents, Michael and Carole Middleton and her sister Pippa.
The Queen however is yet to see the baby as she is at Sandringham.
William and Kate are presently at the Kensington Palace and are expected to head to Anmer Hall, their country mansion on the queen’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk.
The Queen is expected to see the baby here.
“The duke is working in East Anglia so the duchess may spend some time in Anmer but Kensington Palace will remain their primary residence,” a palace spokesperson said.
The message of congratulations poured in to the royal family on Saturday led by US president Barack Obama and first lady Michelle who wished the duke and duchess “much joy and happiness on the occasion of the arrival of the newest member of their family”.
Soldiers from the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery will announce the arrival of the new born on with gun salutes in Hyde Park and the Tower of London. They will lead out from Wellington Barracks, near Buckingham Palace to sound 41 shots in the park.
A 62-gun salute by the Artillery Company will take place at the Tower of London at the same time on Monday afternoon.
This is the first time in the last 122 years that four heirs are in waiting to ascend the British throne.
The baby was born in the Lindo wing of St Mary’s hospital in Paddington - the same room where her father prince William and uncle prince Harry were born.
She shares her birthday with footballer David Beckham who turned 40 on Saturday and celebrated it with a grand bash in Morocco.
Several iconic British buildings turned pink to herald the arrival of the princess including Tower Bridge.
