A 44-year-old consultant anaesthetist left a patient under anaesthesia during surgery to engage in sexual activity with a nurse in another operating theatre.
The incident occurred at Tameside Hospital, Greater Manchester, on 16 September 2023.
The consultant has been identified as Dr Suhail Anjum.
The incident was witnessed by a colleague, Nurse NT, who reported seeing Anjum and the nurse, referred to as Nurse C, in a compromising position.
According to BBC, the consultant anaesthetist had said he needed a "comfort break" and asked another nursing colleague to monitor the male patient halfway through the procedure.
Instead, Anjum went to another operating theatre at the hospital in Ashton-under-Lyne where he had sexual activity with a woman referred to in the hearing as Nurse C.
According to a report in Daily Mail, Anjum, who now works in Pakistan, said, "he felt shame and guilt at this horribly embarrassing incident, I don't know why it happened. I don't know what I was thinking."
