Watch: Protesters torch Nepal PM Oli’s private home; storm, vandalise President Poudel's residence
Protestors on Tuesday vandalised the private residences of Nepal's President Ram Chandra Poudel and KP Sharma Oli in Nepal amid the demonstration against the government cracked down during GenZ protests.
According to local reports numerous protestors gathered near Poudel's residence and threw his portrait at the staircase inside his house in Bohoratpur.
In Balkot, demonstrators gathered around and set fire to Oli's private residence in Balkot. Oli is currently at the Prime Minister's residence at Balwatar.
Demonstrators gathered near Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's private residence in Balkot on Tuesday, demanding accountability for Monday's fatalities. During the protest, demonstrators set fire to the residence.
Meanwhile, the protestors also set ablaze the central office of Nepali Congress party in Sanepa.
Earlier in the day, the agitators also torched the residence of Prime Minister Oli at Balkot in Bhaktapur. Oli is currently at the Prime Minister's residence at Balwatar.
Protesters also torched the residence of former home minister Ramesh Lekhak at Naikap in Kathmandu.
The agitating youths also pelted stones at the residence of Communication Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung in Sunakothi at Lalitpur district, eye witnesses said. Gurung had ordered a ban on the social media sites.
Several other political leaders' offices and residence were also targeted with stone-pelting and arsons.
This comes a day after 18 people were killed in a violent protest against government’s sudden decision to block access to major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, Snapchat, Pinterest, X, and Tencent-owned apps.
Authorities justified the move by citing new regulations requiring platforms to formally register in the country, claiming the step was necessary to curb fake IDs, hate speech, fraud, and other online crimes.
However, in a late-night development on Monday, the government announced the restoration of access to social media platforms, in an apparent bid to ease public anger.
The protest continued for the second day as demonstrators now demanded the resignation of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli and vandalised residences of several political leaders.
The protests, now in the second day, have spread beyond Kathmandu, with demonstrators targeting political leaders’ residences and party offices. Clashes between protesters and police have further fuelled tensions nationwide.
Meanwhile, Nepal Prime Minister KP Oli called for an all-party meet at 6pm on Tuesday, requesting "all brothers and sisters to remain calm in this difficult situation.”
“I am in dialogue with the relevant parties to assess the situation and find a meaningful conclusion. For that, I have also called an all-party meeting at 6 pm today. I humbly request all brothers and sisters to remain calm in this difficult situation,” he said.
