The return of Ranil Wickremesinghe to the prime minister’s post for the sixth time has fanned anti-government protests in Sri Lanka, which is facing a serious economic crisis. Here’s a profile of the canny politician who may prove the right man at the right time due to his governance experience as well as international appeal

Sri Lanka has just elected a new prime minister. Or rather, its president has just named Ranil Wickremesinghe to the post. After his own brother Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa brought in 73-year-old Wickremesinghe, to replace him.

The recent history of Mahinda’s and Wickremesinghe’s roles in governance reads like a castling manoeuvre.
