Heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding and landslides in Nepal, resulting in the deaths of at least 112 people within the past 24 hours.

More than 100 people have been injured, and rescue teams are actively searching for 68 individuals who remain missing following the disaster in the Himalayan nation, where several areas have been flooded since Friday.

On Saturday, Nepal experienced its highest rainfall in 54 years, with 323 millimeters recorded in just 24 hours.

Low pressure in Bay of Bengal

Since Thursday evening, Nepal has been enduring heavy rainfall caused by moisture from the Bay of Bengal and a low-pressure system in the area, leading to a nationwide humanitarian crisis.

Warnings issued to 56 of 77 districts

The country's National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Authority (has issued a warning for 56 of the 77 districts regarding potential disasters from the ongoing rainfall, urging residents to exercise caution.

Over 412,000 households face danger

Nepal has already recorded above-average rainfall this year. Nepal's NDRRMA also projected that around 412,000 households could be affected by disasters related to the monsoon.

Schools closed

In view of this, Nepal has closed schools for three days, while the Nepal Army and police forces are working around the clock to conduct search and rescue operations nationwide.

Record monsoon

The monsoon season, which provides approximately 80 percent of Nepal's total annual rainfall, typically spans 105 days. Data from the Meteorological Office indicates that the country has received 1,586.3 millimeters of rain since the monsoon began on June 10.
