Hindus urge Bangladesh PM to form minority commission

DHAKA: Hindu community leaders have urged Bangladesh PM Tarique Rahman to form a minority commission to address “issues” faced by members of the minority group, as it cited incidents of harassment and deprivation, including job losses, during the tenure of the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government.

A delegation met Rahman on Thursday and sought the enactment of a minority protection law and the establishment of a Hindu foundation for the protection of the rights and welfare of the Hindu community. “He listened to our concerns and assured us that the issues would be addressed gradually,” said Jayanta Kumar Deb, president of the Mohanagar Sarbojaneen Puja Committee. Deb, along with Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad president Basudeb Dhar and advocate Subrata Chowdhury, also sought at least three days of public holiday for Durga Puja.
