What opposition party demands

The opposition party BNP demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and called for a free and fair vote under a caretaker government. The party has been calling on Hasina to resign to allow elections scheduled in January to be held under a neutral caretaker government but has been rejected so far. (AP Photo)

BNP accuses Sheikh of corruption, human rights abuses

BNP accused Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been in power for 15 years, of corruption and human rights abuses. Western governments have expressed concern about the political climate in Bangladesh, where her ruling Awami League holds dominance in the legislature, and her security forces have been accused of detaining opposition activists, conducting extrajudicial encounters, and causing the disappearance of opposition leaders and supporters. Protest turns violent

Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets as clashes erupted in Dhaka. Police also accused protesters of setting fire to a bus on Sunday morning, resulting in one fatality and another person suffering severe burns. US threatens sanctions

Hasina's government is under pressure from the Western countries, especially the US after the administration was accused of vote-rigging and suppressing the opposition marred elections in 2014 and 2018. Opposition leader arrested
