Afghanistan crisis live updates: 'Taliban capture Panjshir, now in full control of Afghanistan'

The new government, according to Taliban sources, will be headed by the group’s co-founder, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar. Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob, the son of late Taliban chief Mullah Muhammad Omar, and Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, Taliban sources added, are the two other senior Taliban leaders to be appointed to senior positions.

The Taliban which incurred heavy causalities during a standoff with the Afghan resistance force has joined hands with the Islamic extremist Al-Qaeda to attack the Panjshir province, TASS reported citing a representative of the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan. "al-Qaida militant units are joining the Taliban in attacking Panjshir," Al Arabiya TV channel reported citing the representative.

The European Union is ready to engage with the new Taliban government in Kabul but the Islamist group must respect human rights, including those of women, and not let Afghanistan become a base for terrorism, the EU foreign policy chief said on Friday. "In order to support the Afghan population, we will have to engage with the new government in Afghanistan," Josep Borrell said during a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Slovenia.

Qatar hopes to see the establishment of humanitarian aid corridors at Afghan airports within 48 hours, Doha's envoy to Afghanistan told the Al Jazeera broadcaster on Friday. "We hope in the next 24 or 48 hours to see the opening of humanitarian corridors so humanitarian aid can enter through Kabul airport -- and other functioning airports," Mutlaq al-Qahtani told the Qatari channel from Afghanistan.

China's State Councillor and foreign minister Wang Yi on Friday told his Iranian counterpart that China and Iran need to play a constructive role in achieving a smooth transition and peaceful reconstruction of Afghanistan, which borders both countries. Wang also said during a phone call with Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, who was appointed to the role last month, that the United States has responsibility to help with the reconstruction of Afghanistan, according to a statement from China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
