The Russian-made Yak-130 aircraft went down in a densely forested area in Ia Pa district, Gia Lai province. The pilots used their mobile phones to contact authorities and provide their location. They were found approximately 10 hours after the crash.

Recovery efforts to retrieve the wreckage are underway, but heavy rain and strong winds are causing delays.

Pham Truong Son, deputy chief of the general staff of the Vietnam People's Army, said: "Extracting a five-ton aircraft from the forest requires specialised equipment and careful planning, so it will take some time."
