GARISSA: Pope Francis on Friday condemned the attack by Islamic militants on a Kenyan university as an act of “senseless brutality” and called for those responsible to change their violent ways. In a telegram of condolence, Francis also urged Kenyan authorities to work to bring an end to such attacks and “hasten the dawn of a new era of brotherhood, justice and peace.”
The death toll in an assault by Somali militants on a Kenyan university is likely to climb above 147, a government source and media said on Friday, with local residents furious over the government’s failure to prevent the bloodshed.

Strapped with explosives, masked al-Shabaab gunmen stormed the Garissa University college campus, some 200km from the Somali border, in a pre-dawn rampage on Thursday. Kenya’s biggest-selling Daily Nation newspaper, citing sources, said the death toll would be significantly higher. Outside the university gates, a throng of veiled women clang to the hope that missing people would turn up alive.
