The Philippines' defense minister has vowed to strictly enforce the country's sovereignty in response to secessionist threats made by former president Rodrigo Duterte. Defense secretary Gilberto Teodoro stated that the Department of National Defense's mandate is to secure the state's sovereignty and the integrity of the national territory, as stated in the constitution.

He emphasized that this mandate will be strictly enforced both externally and internally. Teodoro's remarks echoed similar statements made by the national security adviser, who stated that the government will use its authority and forces to prevent any attempts to dismember the Republic.

The justice ministry also expressed its opposition to any efforts to undermine the country's territorial integrity and called on Filipinos to reject secessionist ideologies. Duterte, the first Philippine president from Mindanao, a resource-rich island plagued by violence and conflict, called for independence for the island.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief Romeo Brawner reminded troops of their oath to follow the chain of command and be loyal to the constitution and duly constituted authorities. Brawner emphasized the importance of a strong and united AFP for a strong and united Philippines.
