No Nazi salutes please, soccer fans warned
English football yobs who make Hitler salutes or perform goosestep marches during this summer's World Cup could be jailed in Germany, British home secretary Charles Clarke has warned.
Hooligans who mimic Nazi stereotypes could also face further prosecution on their return home under a strategy being employed for the tournament.
The warning came as Clarke told how British and German authorities will deal with thugs.
He warned that fans who thought it "funny" to make fun of the horror of the Third Reich would be dealt with severely.
Under German law, it is a crime to copy Nazi symbols or actions and Clarke gave the authorities his "full support" to arrest or jail offenders. "The era we are talking about is one of total horror and destruction," he said.
"It is not a joke - it is not a comic thing to do. I would say to anyone who thinks it is funny, it is deeply insulting and wrong." Around 100,000 England fans are expected in Germany and Clarke said 79 British officers will travel with them.
