Nepal protests: Committee imposes travel restrictions on ex-PM Oli; barred from leaving country
A high-level investigation committee examining the violence in Nepal has recommended travel restrictions for several former officials, including former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
The panel suggested a foreign travel ban and a ban on leaving the Kathmandu Valley without prior approval for the former PM Oli, former home minister Ramesh Lekhak, former home secretary Gokarnamani Duwadi, former national investigation department chief Hutraj Thapa, and former Kathmandu chief district officer Chhabi Rijal.
Nepal’s interim government, led by Sushila Karki, has set up a three-member panel to investigate the ‘Gen Z’ protests that left 72 people dead and led to the fall of the KP Sharma Oli government.
The panel is headed by former Supreme Court judge Gauri Bahadur Karki. Its other members include former police officer Bigyan Ran Sharma and legal expert Bishweshwor Prasad Bhandari.

Forming the panel was one of the key demands of the Gen Z group, which organised the nationwide protests on September 8 and 9. The commission has been asked to submit its report within three months.
In all, at least 72 people, including three policemen, died during the violent protests against corruption and government’s social media ban.
