Mild quake jolts southern Philippines
MANILA: A mild earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale was detected in waters off the southern Philippines but caused no damage or panic, authorities said on Friday.
The epicenter of the quake, which occurred late on Thursday night, was located off the south-eastern coast of Mindanao island, about 1,100 kilometers south of Manila, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

The quake took place at 11:43 pm (1933 IST) on Thursday night and was tectonic in origin.
Residents in the southern city of General Santos on Mindanao island barely noticed the quake, the institute added.
The Philippines sits on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where continental plates meet, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
Although about 10 quakes hit the Philippines every day, few are felt. Only three major destructive tremors have been recorded in more than 30 years, according to the institute.
