The Kenya Space Agency (KSA) confirmed the object, a ring-like structure approximately 2.5 metres in diametre and weighing around 500 kilogrammes, fell at about 3.00 pm local time.

According to AFP reports, the KSA, in collaboration with local authorities, secured the area and took custody of the debris for further analysis. The KSA praised the quick response of villagers who alerted authorities immediately after the incident.

Investigators are now working to determine the origin of the object. "Preliminary assessments indicate that the object is a separation ring from a launch vehicle," the agency said, adding that such components are typically designed to burn up during re-entry or fall in remote areas.

Officials have assured the public that the debris does not pose a safety risk.

Space debris, or space junk, refers to non-functional human-made objects in space. This includes defunct satellites, used rocket stages, fragments from past collisions, and even tiny particles like paint flakes.

The issue of space debris has become more pressing as space activities increase globally. In 2022, a piece of a SpaceX Dragon capsule landed on an Australian farm, and earlier this year, an American family filed a lawsuit against NASA after debris damaged their home in Florida.

China has also faced criticism for allowing large parts of its Long March rockets to fall uncontrolled to Earth, raising safety concerns.
