Mass shooting at Bondi Beach: Australian PM Anthony Albanese calls situation ‘distressing’; multiple casualties reported
Australian Prime minister Anthony Albanese expressed his shock after 11 people, and one of the shooters, were reported dead in mass shooting at Sydney's popular Bondi beach.
"The scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing. Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person affected," he said in a statement shared on X.
Further addressing the people he added, "I have just spoken to the AFP Commissioner and with the NSW Premier. We are working with the NSW Police and will provide further updates as more information is confirmed. I urge people in the vicinity to follow information from the NSW Police."
Later, he spoke to reporters and gave another statement in Canberra saying that he was “devastated” by the massacre.
“This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which should be a day of joy, a celebration of faith, an act of evil, antisemitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation,” Albanese said. “There is no place for this hate, violence and terrorism in our nation," he added.
Further expressing solidarity with the Jews he also said, “Let me be clear we will eradicate it amidst this vile act of violence and hate will emerge a moment of national unity where Australians across the board will embrace their fellow Australians of Jewish faith,” he said. “The evil that was unleashed at Bondi Beach today is beyond comprehension, and the trauma and loss that families are dealing with tonight is beyond anyone’s worst nightmare.”
