New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon made a historic national apology on Tuesday to victims and families of those abused in state and faith-based care institutions over the past seven decades.

The apology followed a public inquiry, which found that approximately 200,000 children and vulnerable adults were subjected to physical, sexual, and psychological abuse between 1950 and 2019.

In an emotional address to the parliament, Luxon acknowledged the "unimaginable pain" endured by survivors, including those subjected to torture in notorious institutions such as the Lake Alice psychiatric hospital.

"It was horrific. It was heartbreaking. It was wrong. And it should never have happened," Luxon said. The Prime Minister apologised on behalf of both current and previous governments for the harm caused by these institutions.

The Royal Commission of Inquiry, which lasted six years and spoke to over 2,300 survivors, revealed widespread abuse in state care, foster homes, and religious institutions, reported the news agency AP.

Survivors, particularly from New Zealand’s Indigenous Māori community, were disproportionately affected.

Luxon promised the government's commitment to 28 of the 138 recommendations made by the inquiry and vowed to introduce further reforms, including the establishment of a National Remembrance Day in November 2025 to honour victims.

While many survivors expressed mixed emotions about the apology, calling for further action and compensation, Luxon’s government has committed to setting up a redress system by 2025.

The inquiry’s recommendations included the creation of an office to prosecute abusers, the renaming of streets and monuments dedicated to perpetrators, and the creation of laws to prevent future abuses.

This New Zealand PM has the magnanimity to apologise to nation for there lapses towards people abused in care. And here we have our NEECH PM, who orchestrated a Genocide against Christianity in Manipur, via his BJP hate cell orchestrators , extremist hindu right-wing elements such as RSS and Manipur state BJP administration. Together they committed the Worst Ethnic Genocide against Christianity in Manipur on christian kuki tribal community at the hands of state-sponsored extremist elements amongst hindu Meitei community. Entire Nation and the world watched in horror , horrifying videos, images and stories about horrifying inflicted inhuman atrocities, dastardly burning of churches , homes and establishments of catholic christian kuki community members by hindu Meitei community. This carnage which started from March 2023 is yet to cool it's embers. And yet neither the national BJP party, nor there NEECH PM and Neech Tadi-paar HM apologized to nation and Christian community particularly Kuki's in Manipur. So far our NEECH PM hasn't yet placed his foot in Manipur. But has all the time to rendezvous all over the world or at his friend Ambani Clan's wedding. But has no shame in even speaking few words of condolences to christian kuki community in Manipur on there loss of hundreds of community members, or for desecration or burning of churches , or destruction of homes and establishments belonging to them. But if one Hindu temple is scratched or hindu's abroad are reprimanded for disobeying law & order, both our NEECH's will howl & holler that there Hindutva is destroyed and desecrated. And thus they expose there dastardly, diabolic and fake hindutva politics or ideologies. Our NEECH PM should learn from New Zealand PM the genuineness of humility and seeking apology from nation in such inhuman atrocities on fellow citizens .
