Ex-Thai PM Thaksin to face trial for royal insult, states prosecutor's spokesman

BANGKOK: Thailand's former Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, is set to face charges for allegedly insulting the monarchy, according to an official statement on Wednesday. This development marks a significant blow to the influential political figure, whose supporters currently hold power in the government.

The accusation against Thaksin originated from an interview he gave to foreign media in 2015, which was subsequently reported by the royalist military responsible for overthrowing the government led by his sister, Yingluck Shinawatra.

Winyat Chartmontri, Thaksin's legal representative, informed Reuters that his client was unable to attend Wednesday's hearing due to a Covid-19 infection.
