Hurricane made landfall on Caribbean island of Carriacou
Powerful hurricane Beryl made landfall Monday on the Caribbean island of Carriacou. It was the earliest storm to form in the Atlantic due to record warm waters.
Winds increased to 150 mph
Officials said that Carriacou is one of the islands where officials said winds increased up to 150 mph (240 mph), blowing off roofs and causing other damage.
“This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation,” the National Hurricane Center said.
Warning issued to several nations
Hurricane warnings were issued in multiple countries including, Barbados, Grenada, Tobago, St. Vincent and the Grenadines as thousands of people took shelter in homes and shelters.
Hurricane Ivan was the last strong hurricane to hit the southeast Caribbean 20 years ago, which killed dozens of people in Grenada.
Severe damage in Barbados
More than a dozen reports of roof damage, fallen trees, and electric posts were received in Barbados , as per the officials.
Wilfred Abrahams, minister of home affairs and information said that once Beryl passes, drones will assess damage and speed up response.
Life-threatening storm
Forecasters issued a life-threatening storm warning, cautioning that it could reach heights of "up to 9 feet (3 meters)" in certain areas.
The forecast also predicted significant rainfall, with "3 to 6 inches (7.6 to 15 centimeters)" expected across Barbados and neighboring islands.
Tropical storm warning
A tropical storm warning was issued for St. Lucia, Martinique, and Trinidad.
Additionally, a tropical storm watch was issued for Haiti’s entire southern coast, and from Punta Palenque in the Dominican Republic west to the border with Haiti.
A hurricane watch was also issued for Jamaica.
