JOHANNESBURG: Argentine, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates are six nations who will be the joining the Brics from January 2024.
"We have decided to invite the Argentine Republic, the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, to become full members of BRICS. The membership will take effect from the first of January 2024," South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said after summit in Johannesburg.
Supporting the decision to induct new nations, PM Modi said that India has always believed addition of new members to Brics will further strengthen and give our shared efforts a new impetus.
PM Modi extended his congratulations to the leaders and citizens of Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE for their successful attainment of full membership within Brics.
Presently composed of the emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, Brics has taken a decision to enlarge its membership during this week's summit in Johannesburg. This marks the second instance of Brics opting for expansion. Initially established in 2009, the bloc consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, and China. South Africa was subsequently welcomed into the fold in 2010.
The collective influence of the Brics alliance extends to about 40% of the global population and encompasses over a quarter of the world's GDP.
Iran hails Brics membership as 'success for foreign policy'A senior adviser to Iran's president on Thursday hailed the country's forthcoming admission to the Brits grouping as a triumph of diplomacy for the Islamic republic.
"Permanent membership in the group of global emerging economies is considered a historic development and a strategic success for the foreign policy of the Islamic republic," Mohammad Jamshidi wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
