Just hours after the tragic plane crash in South Korea, a portion of an Air Canada plane caught fire after skidding down the runway at the Halifax airport. The airport was briefly shut down as a result, according to CBC News.

Air Canada Flight 2259, operated by PAL Airlines, had just arrived from St. John’s, Newfoundland, when a malfunction in the landing gear triggered a fire that spread across part of the aircraft.

According to initial reports, the runway mishap began when one of the plane’s tires failed to deploy correctly. The resulting imbalance caused the aircraft’s wing to scrape along the tarmac, sparking a fire.

Nikki Valentine, a passenger on board, told CBC News, “The plane started to sit at about a 20-degree angle to the left and, as that happened, we heard a pretty loud — what almost sounded like a crash sound — as the wing of the plane started to skid along the pavement, along with what I presume was the engine,” she said. “The plane shook quite a bit and we started seeing fire on the left side of the plane and smoke started coming in the windows.”

Emergency response teams quickly mobilized to handle the situation. All passengers and crew were evacuated safely. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

In a statement, airport authorities confirmed the emergency and assured the public that a thorough investigation was underway to determine the exact cause of the landing gear failure.

This incident came hours after another aviation tragedy earlier in the day. A Boeing 737-800 aircraft operated by Jeju Air crashed at Muan International Airport in South Korea, claiming the lives of at least 120 people.

There is pressure on Airlines world-wide, as passengers want cheapest possible ticket for flights and for airlines it is the daunting task to have reasonable balance between their own economic-survival to the overall safety needs and to get well-experienced pilots at the reasonable costs. There must be some logical ticket price range upper-side and lower-side, as many-times while tendering such rules are applied for suppliers or service providers to maintain a reasonable balance between quality and economics. We normally forget that nothing comes free or cheap in this world, here free I mean costs lower then the tripping point for flight tickets. Underlaying problem is that the CEOs of companies get bonus/ package on their companies' profits and they for years try to squeeze for getting higher & higher profits and then they change company when they feel that matter has gone to a tripping point (not try for all but for many) and once they move-out of the company they as such do not have any liability legally and also morally, until & unless such things are not checked/ plugged, we will keep passengers bleeding for none of their faults. Boeing is one of the very recent example, one can see how urge for increasing profit takes over the minds and cost is paid by others, certainly this story is different from Economic Airlines, of Couse one can have thousands of argument either-way but the bonus or package to profit must have some kind of checks and balances, like delaying full release of package amount, and it should be kept in some other third-party account and gradually paying over 7 to 8 years if nothing immoral was done to maximize profits and not done any kind of other malpractices. We need to think about it sincerely, just as citizen you see how companies tried to maximus their profits at the time of Covid-19 crises, we need to take such issues more sincerely & seriously for the overall betterment of the the society.
