Ten people, including four children, lost their lives following a stampede during a Christmas charity distribution in Nigeria's capital on Saturday, according to news agency AP citing police reports.
The tragic incident happened in the early hours at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Abuja's Maitama. Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed that more than 1,000 people were evacuated from the location.
This marks the second such incident within a week in Africa's most populated nation. Local organisations, religious institutions and private citizens are increasingly hosting charitable events before Christmas, as the country grapples with its most severe cost-of-living crisis in decades.
