The Pakistan government’s latest ban of one Islamist party may show signs of impatience with fundamentalist politics. But popular and military support to hardline clerics may change things
Pakistan this week decided to ban a radical Islamist party under the country’s Terrorism Act after its supporters clashed with law enforcement agencies for three days, leaving seven persons dead and over 300 policemen injured.
The leader of Islamist party Tehreek-i-Labaik Pakistan (TLP), Saad Hussain Rizvi, had issued an ultimatum to the Imran Khan government, telling them to expel the French ambassador or face protests. The expulsion demand was due to France allowing the publication of caricatures of Prophet Muhammed.
