ISLAMABAD: Pakistan army chief Ashfaq Kayani delivered a stern message to Gilani at a meeting, saying: ''You should play your constitutional and legal role in calming down the situation'', reports said.
Following the talks with PM Yousaf Gilani and Kayani, President Asif Ali Zardari also decided to let Punjab governor Salman Taseer convene the provincial assembly so that it could elect a new leader of the House from the PML-N, which is the single largest party there.
Sources added that the government could also provide some ''relief'' to the Sharifs with regard to the court order barring them from contesting polls or holding elected office. The turnaround signalled the crucial role played by the army in forcing the government to act.
The United States, however, set to rest fears of a military coup. America's chairman of joint chiefs of staff Michael Mullen said there is not a ''high probability right now'' of a military takeover, though he had tried to calm Kayani when the army chief expressed anger over the way Pakistan's political establishment was behaving.
