ISLAMABAD: Unidentified gunmen on Sunday kidnapped one of the top officials in Pakistan's troubled South Waziristan tribal region, considered a stronghold of the local Taliban led by Baitullah Mehsud.
Additional political agent Aamir Latif was abducted by the gunmen while he was travelling from Wana, the main town in South Waziristan Agency, to Tank district in North West Frontier Province, state-run APP news agency reported.
The kidnappers pulled Latif out of his vehicle at a place called Karkanara and bundled him into another car before fleeing the scene.
Assistant Political Officer Khalid Latif said there was no information about the kidnapped official's whereabouts.
The political administration of the semi-autonomous tribal region cordoned off the Karkanara area and launched a search for Latif.
