Saudi Arabia’s NEOM: Inside the world’s most ambitious city of the future
In the northwest corner of Saudi Arabia, along the pristine shores of the Red Sea, a bold experiment is unfolding, one that promises to reshape not only the future of urban development, but the very way humans live, work, and thrive. The NEOM project, launched under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, is a $500 billion megacity initiative that aims to leapfrog traditional infrastructure and social models by integrating cutting-edge technologies, sustainability, and human-centric design.
Championed by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, NEOM represents a new frontier in imagining cities as engines of innovation and ecological harmony. From renewable energy to floating industrial districts and luxury mountain retreats, NEOM is unlike anything the world has seen before.
The name NEOM itself is a blend of two words: "neo", meaning “new” in Greek, and "Mustaqbal", Arabic for “future," thus, NEOM means “a new future.” It’s not just a city, it’s a vision to create sustainable, tech-forward, and people-centric environments that can solve the biggest challenges facing humanity.
NEOM is strategically situated in Saudi Arabia’s Tabuk Province, bordering Egypt and Jordan, and covers over 26,500 square kilometers (10,200 square miles), an area larger than some countries. Its location offers direct access to global trade routes through the Red Sea and Suez Canal, positioning it as a future hub for logistics, tourism, and innovation across Asia, Europe, and Africa.
NEOM forms a central part of Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia’s national transformation program aimed at economic diversification, reducing dependency on oil, and fostering a vibrant society and thriving economy.
Rather than being a single monolithic city, NEOM is a network of multiple specialized developments, each serving a unique function and contributing to the broader ecosystem.
Announced in 2021, The Line is the centerpiece of NEOM’s bold urban vision, a 170-kilometer-long, 200-meter-wide, and 500-meter-tall linear city consisting of two parallel skyscrapers stretching across the desert. Designed to be entirely zero-carbon, it will be powered by 100% renewable energy such as solar and wind. Every essential service will be within a five-minute walk, enhancing walkability and quality of life. A high-speed, AI-powered transit system will enable residents to travel from end to end in just 20 minutes. Green spaces, including a central park and continuous green corridor, will run the entire length. The city will integrate smart mobility solutions like autonomous vehicles and drone logistics, all while maintaining compact density to preserve 95% of NEOM’s surrounding natural environment. This groundbreaking project reimagines the future of urban living.
Launched in 2021, Oxagon is NEOM’s innovative industrial zone and is set to become the world’s largest floating structure. It is designed around Industry 4.0 and circular economy principles, emphasizing sustainable and tech-driven manufacturing. The city will feature a next-generation port and an integrated supply chain system, fully powered by renewable energy sources. It will also house a cutting-edge research and innovation campus, focusing on clean technologies. Oxagon supports NEOM’s ambition to be a global leader in advanced manufacturing, logistics, and green innovation.
Inaugurated in 2022, Sindalah marks NEOM’s debut as a premium destination in the Red Sea. This luxury island retreat is envisioned as a sophisticated hub for yachting, leisure, and hospitality. It will create 3,500 new jobs in tourism and offer an exclusive mix of beach clubs, upscale resorts, and marinas. Sindalah’s design harmonizes luxury with environmental sustainability, setting new standards for eco-conscious resort development.
Trojena is a striking mountain destination located at altitudes between 1,500 and 2,600 meters and spans 60 square kilometers. Designed as a year-round adventure tourism hub, it features ski slopes with sub-zero temperatures in winter, making it the first of its kind in the region. Trojena will also include a mountain amphitheater, luxury hotels, and lifestyle retail spaces. Emphasizing sustainability, it incorporates green architecture and outdoor wellness facilities that embrace the natural terrain.
Launched in 2023, Leyja offers a transformative approach to tourism with three uniquely themed hotels: the Adventure Hotel, the Oasis Hotel (integrated into natural rock formations), and the Wellness Hotel (featuring mirrored exteriors). These establishments are equipped with amenities like spas, helipads, and scenic hiking trails. Leyja’s design prioritizes biodiversity and ecological restoration, embodying the concept of regenerative tourism.
Introduced in 2023, Epicon is a futuristic luxury destination blending high-end beachfront villas, exclusive resorts, and upscale residences. The project is centered around ecological harmony and personal well-being, offering features such as immersive architecture, world-class spas, and a range of water sports. Epicon aims to be a haven for those seeking both luxury and a sustainable lifestyle.
Unveiled in 2023, Utamo is envisioned as a next-generation performance and event venue that merges digital technology, art, and nature. Designed to host global artists and immersive shows, Utamo redefines what a cultural space can be. With cutting-edge audio-visual experiences integrated into natural surroundings, it serves as a theatrical playground for creativity and innovation.
While NEOM is inspiring, its scale and speed have drawn scrutiny:
Several top-tier global architecture and engineering firms are contributing, including: AECOM, Zaha Hadid Architects, LAVA, UNStudio, Aedas, Bureau Proberts, Luca Dini Design (for Sindalah), Adjaye Associates, Pei Cobb Freed & Partners and Studio Fuksas (presumed contributors). Their roles span everything from masterplanning to designing specific resorts and urban clusters.
Thefuture is being built now. NEOM is more than a city, it's a vision to reshape civilization for a changing planet. As the most ambitious urban project of the 21st century, NEOM aspires to prove that technology, sustainability, and human well-being can converge at scale.
